Reading Requirements
For Each
Grading Period:

Florida Sunshine State Standards Reading Mandate:  All students must read five books each grading period for home learning.   Therefore, all gifted students in Mrs. Carlson-Yellen's Language Arts class must do so.   Starting with the second grading period, students will be required to turn in five Accelerated Reader Tests and three book reports.  The five Accelerated Reader Tests will count as a weighted grade - worth 5 grades - at the end of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grading periods.  Each book report will count as two grades.
Lexile Level:  According to the Lexile Framework for Reading, students who are interested in reading about a topic are able to read at a higher level.  It is recommended that students read fiction and non-fiction books in a range of 100 lexile points above or below their grade-level range.  As the reader understands what she or he is reading, the lexile level may be raised and become more challenging, then the reader is able to grow.
